As a parent, you know that children come with a lot of responsibilities. But one of the most valuable things you can do for them is to teach them healthy oral habits early on. Getting your child used to take care of their teeth from an early age sets them up for a lifetime of healthy, problem-free smiles.
Dr. Ashley Stuart and Dr. Timothy Burke love providing gentle children's dentistry at our Pen Argyl dental office. Our dental team has a special place in their hearts for our youngest patients, and we will treat your son or daughter as if they were our own.
Starting with their first visit, we’ll let your child get used to us and the new surroundings. Many adults who have dental anxiety say that it began with a bad experience as a child. We won’t let this happen because we will never treat a child who isn’t ready.

The Role That Baby Teeth Play
Baby (primary) teeth start appearing around age one and help your child learn to speak and eat their first solid foods. Primary teeth also play a crucial role because they hold a place for permanent teeth. When permanent teeth are ready to erupt around age 5 or 6, baby teeth fall out to make room for them.
Consequences of Losing a Baby Tooth
But if your child gets a cavity in a baby tooth and we don’t treat it right away, the decay will spread, and we may need to remove the tooth. Gradually, neighboring teeth start to tilt or drift into the space left by the lost tooth.
When the permanent tooth is ready to erupt, there’s no longer enough room for it to come in straight. The result may be that the permanent tooth erupts at an angle that may eventually need orthodontic treatment to correct.
Dental Prevention for Children
Preventive dentistry such as exams and teeth cleanings are every bit as important for your child as it is for you. We work together as a team; we support your child’s oral health with the treatments they need, and you help your child establish good oral health habits at home.
As your child grows, we’ll continue to provide dental exams and cleanings for them every six months to monitor their oral health. When we see your son or daughter routinely, we can stop problems long before they cause discomfort or damage their oral health.
We use dental sealants on teeth like molars that have a lot of grooves and uneven surfaces where bacteria collect and cause cavities. A sealant is a thin coating of plastic that our dentists apply to baby teeth or healthy permanent teeth.
Sports Mouth Guards
Protecting your child’s teeth with a mouth guard during sports activities is essential. Our customized mouth guards fit over your child’s teeth perfectly, so they’re comfortable and easy to wear.
